Thoughts on Colossians 1

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:9, 10 ESV)

Knowledge of His will > so as to walk in a worthy manner > bearing fruit & increasing knowledge (repeat)

There is an expectation to knowing God’s will, that is obedience. And obedience is not an end to itself, obedience leads to bearing fruit – receive blessing and being a blessing. Knowledge is not an end, but a beginning. So be ready, and be faithful to obey.

May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, (Colossians 1:11 ESV)

This does not come easy, and we will get tired. Our strength should come from the boundless power and might of God. Only by His strength are we able to endure, be patient, and have joy.

The next passage, is the gospel – the mystery hidden for ages and generations revealed – presented in another way.

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him…And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, (Colossians 1:16, 21, 22 ESV)
